READING ON A KINDLE

As of this writing, Amazon won't let you BUY Kindle ebooks on the Amazon app on your phone or your iPad (nor on some other tablets). Even though you can read it on anything, you have to use a web BROWSER on your phone tablet, or your regular computer (or an Amazon device) to actually buy it. This does not apply to paperback books.

There are several advantages reading a book using a Kindle app or device. An important one, especially for people with weaker eyesight, is that you can ENLARGE the print! You can make the font size as big as you'd like! You can also choose from several fonts. Pick one you like! You can even pick a background color. (I like the black background.)

You don't actually have to do any of that. There is a default setting so you don't have to choose anything. But it's comfortable picking just the right look to make it easier to read.

Another advantage of reading Kindle books is that, if you use a portable device, it's much easier than carrying around a lot of heavy books. You can literally carry many dozen (hundreds) of books around with you! Reading a book with several hundred pages, for example, can be heavy if you're using a traditional paper book. It's also hard to hold if you read lying down in bed. But Kindle books are light! And there's a adjustable backlight making it easy to read in a dark room without disturbing others (too much).

So here's how to get and set up your Kindle app:

(1) Download the (FREE) Kindle app from your app store or wherever you get applications for your device. OR! Just...

GO HERE!

(2) After you download the Kindle app (FREE!), you'll log in on it with your Amazon username and password. That's it. Although you'll probably want to tweak it so it's just right for you, it's really all set up and ready to go anyway!

[If you don't have an Amazon account, you'll be able to set one up (FREE!) on the Amazon website. (Look around for a place to set up your account. It's probably in the top right corner of the page.) If you need help doing that, just ask someone who has an account.]

(3) The Amazon Kindle app will work on (almost) any device you have. You can read the same book on one or all of your devices, whichever you happen to have with you. You can download the Kindle app on your computer (Mac or PC), on your tablet (i:e.: iPad, Fire, or any other tablet), on whichever phone you have, or on an Amazon Kindle device such as an Amazon Fire or an (Amazon) Kindle e-reader (You can buy those on the Amazon website.). Download the Kindle app to any or all of those. (The app already comes with the Fire and the Kindle e-readers.)

(4) After logging in to your account on your Kindle app...well, you're done! Any Kindle books you have bought or will buy from the Amazon website in the future under your account will automatically appear in the app!

(5) Clicking on the item4 symbol in the Kindle app let's you adjust the fonts, font size, and layout of the pages to what you'd like. Try out different settings until you find what you like. The item5 symbol takes you to one of the contents menus to help you get around. (Additionally, The Cartainos also has a separate even more complete Table of Contents at the beginning of the book.) The item6 symbol lets you place a bookmark on a page. There are also other features in the Kindle app that let you do even more. Look around in the app or, better yet, find someone who is familiar with it to help you out as you get started.

There is more help from Amazon in the Kindle app itself as to how to do other things as you read — like highlight passages, write notes to yourself, sync so that all your devices know where you left off (it does that automatically as long as you're connected to the Internet), etc, etc. There's also help on the website. The more you learn, the more comfortable you'll be. Be sure to learn how to enlarge both the font size AND photos in books you read. Again, if anything seems confusing, just ask someone who knows how to do it. Once you get used to it, your reading life will be even more enjoyable!

Or, you can just listen to the audiobook!
